Cultural Experiences

The Big Island holds a special place in Hawaiian history and culture — it's the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great, home to some of Hawaii's most sacred sites, and the island where many traditional practices remain strongest. Cultural experiences offer meaningful connections to Hawaiian heritage that go far deeper than typical tourist activities.

Historical and cultural tours visit significant sites including Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge), the Kamehameha statue in Kohala, ancient petroglyphs at Puako, and the royal fishponds of the Kohala Coast. Knowledgeable guides — many of them Native Hawaiian — share mo'olelo (stories) that bring these places to life and explain their continued cultural significance.

Hands-on cultural workshops teach traditional Hawaiian arts including lei making with native flowers, basic hula steps and their meanings, ukulele playing, and traditional craft-making. These interactive experiences provide a personal connection to Hawaiian culture that participants carry with them long after returning home.

The Big Island's cultural richness extends to its food traditions — poi pounding, traditional imu (underground oven) cooking, and the gathering practices that sustained Hawaiian communities for centuries.
